Nutrition Is The Best Medicine

If the old idiom "You are what you eat" is true, then unhealthy food must result in an unhealthy body.  We believe that an animal's diet should be treated as a medicine that they take each and every day.

40 million years ago the earliest prehistoric dogs and cats began evolving on planet earth. For the next 39.97 million years they roamed the planet as wild beasts, catching prey, scavenging, hunting as packs and evolving into their modern counterparts. It was not until about 30,000 years ago that man is believed to have domesticated the first dog, and only just over 30 years ago in Australia that the first commercial cooked dog and cat foods were released onto the market. And with that, we believe, began the slow and insidious decline in health of modern day dogs and cats.

Fortunately for our cats and dogs, this means that there are a few simple recommendations that, if followed, will lead to vastly improved health and longevity.

Make their food;
  • Fresh
  • Raw
  • Preservative-Free
  • High Protein, Low Carbohydrate
  • Complete with vitamins and minerals

For a number of years now, we have been suggesting a move towards these principles for feeding dogs and cats. Until recently this has involved use of balanced "Paleolithic" recipes for preparation by dedicated owners.

While we still believe that these home-prepared recipes are the best, freshest option for your dog or cat, recently we have come across Vets All Natural Complete Mix which has made the transition manageable for many more pet owners.

Dr Bruce Syme, our colleague, friend and founder of Vets All Natural has visited us and trained our staff on many of the finer points of why and how to use these revolutionary diets.

Please feel free to access Bruce's extensive list of articles, answering frequently asked questions about how to use the diets.

Reference information is also available in these articles with regards to many disease conditions for which we have found these diets to be very beneficial including;
  • Skin Allergies and other Dermatitis
  • Arthritis
  • Pancreatitis
  • Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease and Struvite Crystals
  • Anal Gland Impaction
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Alternatively, see our staff for information on the diets, and to find out which one might be appropriate for your dog or cat.
